Academia Meets Industry

Case studies of partnerships between academia and business will be presented by faculty from the University of Missouri-Columbia's School of Engineering.

James Thompson
Ph.D., P.E. Dean, College of Engineering

Dr. Thompson will discuss the importance of engineers for job creation, economic growth and defense of the U.S. and how The College of Engineering is preparing engineers and IT professionals to lead the nation to a more prosperous and sustainable future. Additional topics will include:

  • Business Development/Extension Business development programs
  • University Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship
  • Technology development and commercialization including the commercialization of faculty research and development
Dale Musser
Ph.D. Director, IT Program Computer Science Department

Dr. Musser will discuss the IT Program in the Computer Science department at MU including the Bachelor of Science in IT (BS IT) and the future of the IT Program Masters in Engineering in IT (ME IT) and how the department is defining the curriculum to meet needs fulfilling the need for IT professionals. He will also discuss commercialization examples including:

  • Center for Geospatial Intelligence: searching through large volumes of high resolution imagery for specific content easily and efficiently
  • Geoweb tools for assisting analysts in broad area search
  • GeoIRIS: Geospatial imagery retrieval and indexing system
  • Commercial imagery company: Earth Perspectives, LLC
